5 What is PEP, and what is PREP?
PEP and PREP are both HIV Prevention Treatment. Both Prep and PEP treatment plans involve taking 1 tablet every day.
PEP is given to someone that has ALREADY had sexual intercourse with someone who might be HIV positive (the partner’s status is unknown or the partner is HIV positive.) PEP needs to be taken within 72 hrs of having sexual intercourse with the person, and the treatment plan involves taking 1 tablet every day for 28 days.
PREP is different to PEP. Prep is given to someone BEFORE they have sexual intercourse with someone who might be HIV positive. This is given as a protection for future sexual encounters. This is often the case if you have a partner who is HIV positive, or if your partner does not know their status. This may also be beneficial if you have a partner who refuses to use condoms. Sex workers, drug users, MSM, and people with multiple partners would all benefit from taking PREP. Prep is to be taken every day for as long as you are having sexual relationships with the person.
Both PEP and PREP tablets consist of ARV medication.
